PM's security crticised

SMT Online Editor Brian Sims’ strong opinions on David Cameron’s apparent desire to downgrade his own security regime post-General Election were published in yesterday’s London Evening Standard.

During the last few days, Prime Minister David Cameron has seemingly made a conscious move to downgrade his own personal security arrangements.

Perhaps he’s slightly miffed at having to give up his cycle ride to the House of Commons. Either way, our new leader has seen fit – post-General Election – to dispense with outriders for the PM’s official car and, only yesterday, was pictured walking to work amid a crowd of ‘ordinary’ people.

Writing in The London Evening Standard on Tuesday, regular commentator Simon Jenkins agreed with Cameron’s stance. In a well-crafted and substantial article, Jenkins first looked back on Tony Blair’s overt security arrangements and referred to ‘New Labour, New Security Obsession’.

Jenkins then praised Cameron for “ridding his motorcades of the Soviet-style paraphernalia of sharpshooters, screaming outriders and the cleared traffic lanes” characteristic of The Blair Era. “To Cameron,” wrote Jenkins, “they were ostentation and an unnecessary extravagance”.
